Obesity
Healthercise is an exciting program for children and youth to gain
daily nutritional facts, eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods,
including fruits and vegetables and maintain a balanced weight
through regular physical activities such as dance, exercises, and
walking. The program
also has healthy cooking tips provided to us by volunteer nurses
that teach the children and youth how to prepare their own
nutritional snacks and foods.

Obesity
is... a chronic disease with a strong familial component.
To be obese refers specifically to having an abnormally high
proportion of body fat. Since
2000 obesity progression has reached over 31%.
Unfortunately, researchers say obese children are more than
twice more likely to have diabetes than children of normal weight.
This is an issue that is not getting better, it is getting
worse. Now is the time
for something to be done in our communities to help our children to
have healthier eating habits.
Working
with children and youth is what Footprint of Many is all about.
We have successfully completed projects called Kick butts
with Teen Talk Thursdays and Exhale to Excel, that were targeted to
stop children and youth from tobacco use.
We are now totally committed to helping children who are
obese live healthier and longer lives.
We believe that through health information, exercise, and
lots of encouragement and love we can help children that are obese
increase their self-esteem and decrease their excess weight.
The
Project is conducted in four phases.
Workshops and classes are held at the Footprint of Many office
and presented every year.

Phase
I – December to January
Nutrition for the Soul
- Our introductory workshop focuses on exercise and healthy
eating habits:
This
phase, which was initially funded by a grant from the Kaiser Foundation,
is
an introduction to healthy eating habits.
Ten youth participated in our first workshop, walk-a-thon, visited a
recording studio, and produced a CD entitled “Workout for
Youth”. The youth
lost on an average 6 to 12 pounds in one to two months.

"Walking in Stride
For a Child's Life"
Footprint of Many will
have walk-a-thon during the month of February, which is entitled
"Waling In Stride For a Child's Life". Everyone is invited to
participate and support our walk-a-thon in our continuing effort to
bring awareness to the obesity crisis affecting our community.
